It’s time Scott Morrison stopped playing politics with women’s safety and ruled out once and for all his plan to get domestic violence victims to use their superannuation to escape abusive relationships.

It’s not good enough for the Government to “review” it’s decision to make women to fund their escape from domestic violence by raiding their superannuation savings.

Scott Morrison must dump this plan and rule out ever bringing it back.

Vulnerable consumers will be better protected under proposed legislation set to be introduced into Federal Parliament today. The legislation, to be brought forward by Senators Griff and McAllister, will amend the National Consumer Credit Protection Act (2009) to toughen laws around payday loans and consumer leases to protect Australian families. Almost one million households are now utilising payday loan schemes, leaving many struggling financially due to high fees and interest rates of up to 400 per cent.

Today marks the beginning of Anti-Poverty Week. Reducing poverty remains a significant challenge for Australia and it is clear this government has no plan to help those left behind.

A Shorten Labor Government will provide $40 million over four years to emergency relief organisations across the country, including over $5 million for organisations across Western Australia. 

Since taking on this portfolio I’ve tried to talk with as many community sector organisations as I can. More importantly, I’ve tried to visit them. I think that seeing and understanding the places where organisations do their work is an important part of understanding that work. You can sometimes learn a lot about the lived values of an organisation from the spaces they create – and it can change the conversation to sit in a room that just earlier that day was used to meet clients or host a playgroup.

A Shorten Labor Government will help vulnerable families who are going hungry by investing an additional $6 million to support food relief organisations.

Over the next four years, Labor will provide additional funding to the emergency relief organisations that work in Padstow, Revesby and Panania.
