SAFER PLACES FUNDING FINALLY ANNOUNCED

Almost 20 months after it was first announced, the Morrison Government has finally released the names of the organisations to receive funding from the Safe Places Emergency Accommodation Program.

The $60 million grants program to expand emergency accommodation for women and children experiencing family violence was announced in February last year. According to the Government’s own guidelines, applicants were expected to see grant activity around “July 2020”.

No announcement was made in July or August.

For months, frontline domestic violence services have been crying out for more support.

For months, Labor has called on the Government to release details of this funding.

It is unacceptable that it took this global health pandemic and a dramatic rise in domestic violence reports for this government to deliver promised funding.

The Morrison Government must now ensure this funding is delivered to the organisations as quickly as possible so construction can begin now.

The Morrison Government should also invest in the construction of more social housing. This would create more work for tradies whose jobs are at risk and help put a roof over the heads of more women and children escaping domestic violence.
