Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
In Australia, on average one woman a week is murdered by her current or former partner.
One in three Australian women have experienced abuse at the hands of a current or former partner.
Australian police deal with a domestic violence matter every two minutes - with an estimated 657 domestic violence matters on average every day of the year.
So far this year, approximately 45 Australian women have been killed in a domestic violence homicide.
These women are not just statistics.
They are our mothers, grandmothers, sisters, daughters, friends, neighbours and colleagues. Women and children all have a right to be safe and live free from violence and fear.
Domestic and Family violence is a national crisis and a national shame.
We come together today - in person or online - to raise awareness and commit to action to prevent violence against women. Everyone in the community has a role to play in the prevention of family violence.
Women and children experiencing domestic abuse should not be left alone. The full resources of Government should be used to ensure they are safe and supported. We have attended too many vigils. It’s time to act
